Pinnapola, Geethaka, Narendra, Gerard Vicky, Ashan, Chocho, Rukshan, Dr Siva, Dhammika Atty, Nelundeniya and Harsha came for the meeting on 17 April at the SSC. Sujit and Fonny joined in by phone from the US. Sarinda joined in via sms. Yi-Chuien, Sriyan, Buwaneka and Anil Ranatunga excused.
Decisions [over a number of beers and cuttle fish plates!]
1. Proposed dinner dance was approved.
2. Taking in to consideration the many 82group members overseas it was decided to have the dance in the last week of December. [it now looks like the date will be thursday 27th December]. Given the weekends during this period were already taken it was decided to have the event on a week day [It was felt that during the holiday season of December it did not really matter]. We expect to see members from overseas coming down in large numbers!
3. Besides the dance it was decided to publish a ‘book’! Not a typical book, but one to reminisce… a collection of memories of the ‘good days at College!’, contributed by our class of 82.
4. The event is expected to generate funds to do ‘something meaningful’ for College; decided to think along the lines of academics; sports; teachers in need; kids of departed group members.
5. Initial budgets were discussed. In fact Pinna had made a comprehensive budget; everyone appreciated his efforts. It looks like the dance [all inclusive] will cost somewhere around LKR 1.5m. Those present felt we should aim for 300 and price tickets at LKR 3,000 each so we could cover the bulk of it from ticket sales.
6. Sponsorships are expected to flow in. In fact Rukshan immediately undertook to get LKR 300,000. Those present felt we must raise at least LKR 1.5/2.0m towards the book and the project. With many of our 82group members running companies and otherwise well off! it was felt this target might be way too low.
7. It was decided to appoint country-coordinators to liase with the 82group members in the many regions of the world. Please volunteer.
8. The following responsibilities were allocated for the moment. Chairman Harsha; Secretary Yi-Chuien; Treasurer Dr Siva; Sponsorship Sarinda; Dance Pinnapola assisted by Gerard Vicky; Project Dhammika Atty; Book Sujit. There are a number of others to be allocated.
9. The committee will consist of those present and excused for the first meeting and others to be roped in soon. We need a number of more people to ensure everything goes right; getting the 300 tickets sold, getting the sponsorships in, doing the book, arranging for a group photo etc. Please kindly volunteer to make this a success!

We had a very good response from those who attended yesterdays meeting on our reunion.As we fixed the date for 23 Dec with the venue being Waters Edge it happens to be a poya day.BOOZE WILL BE A MAJOR PROBLEM.Pinna i guess you should check this.Gypsies are available on 23 as well as 22 Dec.I will get Rajitha of Misty aslo and revert.But we first need to see if this poya issue is a problem.Since Gypsies are availabe on 22 Dec may be we should at another venue.will keep you posted on and Pinna if you could check on the venue

Yes I agree with you. Yesterday was a very good day. we managed to work out the plan. Now we have to get activated. Machung Pinna since you got the hall booked. Please get menus and all other things relating to food and stuff planned out now itself. As Atty mentioned Mahindanada has promised to supply the bottles. Atty you better work on that and get that matter sorted out.
The band matter is the next most important thing. If that is sorted out the balance work would not be a problem. Approaching the sponsors Silva you will have to work out a method with Sarinda. Once that is done please let every one know so that they also could promote the mater.
Silva we could not find a person to do the promotions. Please ask your wife and some people who are in the business to recommend some one good. I think this is a very good start.

Let me untangle this date confusion. Last night we thought the date would be the 23rd. But this morning Pinnapola said it would not be possible to get the 23rd, but could get the 27th.
If 27th is possible then maybe we should go ahead with this date since 23rd is poya (even if booze is allowed) Next is booking Misty & Gypsies for this date.
Please take it. The Month of December is very tight. You might loose this date too.

Great work, gang. Glad to see that things are hopping right along. Thanks for the call yesterday and yes, I am willing to help coordinate the publication of a “book” commemorating our time at College. I already have some ideas and will tap several of my illustrious classmates to help me with the compilation of information as well as several articles (humor is a plus here!!). I will be happy to work with Fonny/Liu to coordinate and publicize the Group of 82 re-union here in the U.S. In fact, starting this weekend, I will make a series of calls to all the guys I have telephone numbers for and get them fired up to attend on Dec. 27. Excellent choice with Misty. We flew them down to play at the New York RC OBU dinner/dance a few weeks ago and they rocked the place. Quite uncharacteristically, our friend Fonny was on the dance floor for the entire evening, only pausing to down the periodic Scotchie!!

Harsha, Cho Cho- I need to confirm this date ASSP as December a Friday is impossible to get. Once the date is confirmed I need to have a meeting with the committee to decide the theme. I have already spoken to couple of guys who do art work, on the special theme.
Gerard- We have to contract bands with an advance, a good one(Misty/ Ultimate/WildFire) & a back up band ( Chandimals second connection is good)as well as a compeer. Can I tentatively reserve Cliff Richards.

Also Silva we have to appoint people in different places and ask them to coordinate the matter. In advance we should know how many are coming. This is very important. Start selling tickets from now or the earliest possible instance. Some may need more time than others if the cost of tickets is on the high side.

Since Misty is confirmed ( Gerad is doing the letter of contract I understand) no need to go for a major big band. We could go for a quality B garde supporting band. If not band cost will go up.
Gerad Misty Rajitha is asking for 100,000/= , thats their normal rate. But if you know him well could reduce about 10,000/= app.
Only thing is they have a good demand in December specially on week ends. We have to pay 30,000/= advance for confirmation.
I suggest that DJ is required not because of the music but lighting for the dance floor. Band do not provide it. So we will have to use a DJ as a light provider, so its cheaper to use a DJ with lighting.
Anyway we could discuss nitygrity on 3rd.

By the way Sriyan Thanx for posting the Rugby schedule I am assuming there will be a podcast so that we all can watch. Machan we are planing on sending some funds for the Rugby development. I spoke to Podi Seyed and we have a meeting next Saturday. RCOBANA is a registered non profit org in U.S.A, so guys who live in USA can channel the funds through us to get a tax benifit.
Todays torrential rains and the 2 foot floods [horton place junction] disrupted the scheduled meeting. Many called and I discouraged them from braving the lightning that had killed two people by 5pm.
However, Nelundeniya, Pinnapola, Anil Ranatunga, Rochana, Agalawatte, Dr Siva and Janaka [Fernando] showed.
We resheduled the meeting for TUESDAY 8 MAY at 7pm.
Some suggestions that were put forward during the informal chat are:
1. Open the dance to outsiders as long as table is headed by a 82 group member. Reason for this is to ensure 400 guests.
2. Start selling tickets in advance to collect working capital. It was suggested that we print some sort of coupon in lieu of official tickets.
3. Advertise the dance at the Colombo leg of the bradby. Perhaps Sriyan could get us permission to have a banner at the entrance to the grounds.

Sorry I have not contributed much since I originally started this mayhem – it has been really busy.
I just wanted to make a quick point before your next meeting – Have you decided to restrict the attendees only to batch mates or can someone organize a table and invite guests(why anyone would want to do this with you bunch of rowdies is a different story) – But what I suggest to ensure early ticket sales and also a sell out event – you set a deadline for Batch mates to book their tickets thereafter it is open for members to bring guests – This way if we have not sold out the evening then we could promote guys to bring along some of their buddies who were in College or whoever – you need to ensure it is a sell out event.
If all goes to plan I will be there – we changed our family holiday plans from June to December – one reason being that we could attend the dinner/dance so please unless you hear to the contrary ensure that I have a pair of tickets and am on a good table.
Hope fully I will be in Colombo for a week at the beginning of May on my way to China – so maybe I can attend your next meeting and add my two cents(actually it will be about 5 cents as I never stop at two).

about a dozen members participated at the meeting last evening [8 may 2007] at the SSC. sarinda was formally given the task of raising LKR 1.5 million [at the very least!] from sponsors towards the event; will go towards the ‘give-back-to-college’ project. the man he is, he took upon the challenge in style!
much thanks to sarinda. we are all certain he will [more than] deliver. in fact we hope he will be as successful in this task as he has been with fitting panties on sexy models!! if any of us can help him in this task [sponsorship, not jungees], please get in touch with him.
also, in order to replenish the working capital account; we all paid lkr 5,000 towards the lkr 7,000 dance ticket [for 2]. doc siva was happy for once!

(Sarinda, Buwaneka, Priyantha, Senaka Dahanayake, Anton Kalansuriya, Sumith Ekanayake (my cousin) Sisila rathnayaka. Ruchindra jayasekara (who’s mom worked in the canteen). I am trying to recall other names. May be Priyantha Wije can because he was the 1’st in class. I am now in New Jersey working at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Can you still run the hurdles, just the way you did in college. I still remember the pubs meet in 1980 at Sugathadasa stadium (that time it was a mud track).

If you are coming to the 8-side inter school cricket tournament in NJ on june 9’th, then we will definitely meet. This one is organized by the Ananda College OBU. Last year Royal team kicked-butt all over the place. Good thing is each team must have at least 2 players over 40 years. and 2 palyers b/w 30-40. Last year Sujantha Kumar and Rohan Siriwardhana (Cargo CR&FC) fill the gaps.
This year also it’s going to be intresting. any one in east coast area should try and make it. they had a “papara” band playing last year. lot of old memories coming back.

Lakdasa was in my batch in U of colombo, but no news after that. Chinthaka Wijesuriya had an accident while studying in US. He was partially paralyzed last when I saw him at his house. kk, good keep remebering those who were in 12MS1, if you remeber I was one of those who were in the last row with Ajith Fernando, B K desilva and S R de Silva, I meet Mrs. Munasinghe atleast once a year as I have made it a point to visit her in April of every year. She was a great teacher and kept me out of lot of trouble. I head Miss Devika ranasinghe got married and has now setlled down in down under!
Boys we have to work on the stag too. Band and shantha’s artists are already booked. We will have Natasha also. This time no Russians. We will have the promotion girls too. I think the boys liked it a lot.
With out the Russians I am sure many will be disappointed. Still we cannot help it. The food matter has to be worked out since YC is out. Boys please come out with some sort of workable solutions.

Well.. as for the site and the blog, I guess this is pretty cool. But ofcourse, there are this ‘forum’ software stuff, I mean if we’d like we can set up a bulletin board like Jega have said, with various forums for different stuff and threads and posts in them. I’m now way an IT wizz. The new blog looks good mate, with sub sections and stuff – more order ! However, if boys really want a bulletin board style site, with forums for interesting topics, I can set one up from here. As you probably know, in a site like that, we can open ‘threads’ and ‘posts’ under those threads. Only thing is, if any one to post stuff, they will have to register in the site as a on-line member and then only posting can be done. Another thing is, we may eben have to register a domain name, before we set up the site, if that makes sense. In the end like evry other site, we’ll have to appoint Administrators and Moderators too

The idea about the book is very good. But this can be very nasty too. If it gets there what are you planning to do. But it will be quite interesting to find out some of the forgotten stories.

All this talk about MS1. After all these years, I still think it was one of the most intense and intellectually challenging times for me… The accumulated brainpower in that classroom is hard to beat. Remember going to the public library? We were the only group that went there to study….where discussing a new math problem over plain tea was considered exciting and receiving a pass from a girl was considered scary. The university students avoided us because we asked them physics problems that were way above their heads. That was the epitome of nerdiness – I guess good training for lifelong nerd like me.
Remember the Physics sir Gamini Gunaratne? Who used to skip over the fence to go study for GREs. I guess he was as scared of Kataya as we were. He came to the US, did a PhD and is now living somewhere in the Midwest. Last year I saw him hanging out with Mahinda Rajapaksa at the UN!
By the way, I am trying to get in touch with Sumedha Amarasekara and Vajira Pathirana. Any of you from down under have any clues to their whereabouts? Better yet, their e-mail addresses?

It is by mistake Dhammika Attygalla has sent an old list of names to the papers as the committee members. The real one is what’s there in the blog. This will be corrected soon in the news papers. I have forwarded the correct names of the committee to him. I spoke to Dhammika and he wanted me to apologize on behalf of him. Any way, Machung sorry about the mishap.

Harsha – Hiranya Wouldn’t we need a credit card merchant account for real etickenting? perhaps Hiranya means, an actual automated real time seat booking interface. He is in IT, and must be laughing at my pathatic “down-load and colour” booking system. If that’s the case, I’d say sure…
But some thing we really need now — is an online ‘form’ — where a boy can type in his current bio details — and have it go directly to a datebase. Perhaps Hiranya can look into this? Harsha we need IT expertize, so if Hiranya and also Sumudu can help, they should be admins.

I don’t think we’ll need to sell tickets on e-ticket. 16 tables have already been booked and only 24 available.
Muchung Nelum, Hiranya wants to put it through the e-ticketing. We will do it. If so we could increase the number of tables. any way we can go up to a larger amount than this. If we have more it would be better. But still not a very big amount at least ten more tables. I can remember Pinna saying you can put more than this. Pinna machung please up date the boys on that point. I think since this is during the festival season its not hard to sell the tickets.

Boys! Group of 87 have organised the Royal College Inter Batch Cricket Tournament 2007 at Bloomfield Grounds on 7th July 2007. We have been notified of this. Any interesting party please work out a team and try and be there. Rochan you are the one who do this every year and I suggest you work out a team. I have seen Sari too taking part in this. Thanks for all the good wishes. I dragged this 43 year old bag, up 19,500 feet and made the summit, early morning ( tanzania time) on the 6th of August [july? blogmaster]. I am not ashamed to say that having done this climb once before, on a far more civilized route, this time it was fucking horribly tough, both physically and mentally. There were times, that I questioned my sanity and also half expected my heart to burst through my left nostril.But… as you can see, we survived.
Well….. that’s done and dusted and now, I have given my wife permission to break my kneecaps if I ever mention another mountain. Now I have to go back aways to refer to some stuff on the blog..
KK, if I try to go over a hurdle now, I will probably end up castrating myself. Body dont work like it used to. I am going to be at the Meadowlands on the 5th august, watching The Police, reunion concert.

I truly love to come for this event and I have a ‘one way’ ticket on Etihad at the mo and the bloody airline have stopped flying there altogether! I can’t afford to get stranded in S/L. Any ideas from chaps in the travel trade?
